The African Keyboard app is an Android keyboard that incorporates special characters from African languages that use Latin-based alphabets. Its primary aim is to provide users with the tools to write in their native languages, thus contributing to the preservation and proliferation of these languages and cultures.
The keyboard features familiar QWERTY and AZERTY layouts, making it suitable for everyday writing in English, French, and other languages. Moreover, it includes sets of special characters commonly used in diverse African languages. These characters are organized under keys based on their visual or phonetic similarities and can be accessed through long-press gestures on the keys. Many African languages utilize various accents to denote tones, nasalization, and more. The top row of the keyboard provides easy access to these accents, which can be combined with virtually any letter.
While you can utilize the default "Full African Keyboard Character Set" to access all special characters, you also have the option to navigate to Settings and select a specific character set tailored to languages from your region. The available choices include:
Standardized Alphabets:
- African Reference Alphabet (included in the "Full Character Set")
